C.T scanning

In the summer of 2021 we installed a brand new state of the art BCF Revolution CT scanner in our practice. This was a big investment but we felt it was paramount to demonstrate our commitment to providing the best diagnostic service for your pets.

C.T scanning is well established in human medicine as a powerful diagnostic tool. It is in reality a three dimensional xray machine attached to a powerful computer which creates 3 d images in slices in 3 different planes. When used in conjunction with intravenous contrast it gives incredible diagnostic images of the body including blood vessels, organs, and bones. It has transformed our diagnostic power and we are proud to be able to offer this as an in house procedure to our patients. We also offer this service to referring veterinarians across the province as an out patient facility.

Sedation or general anaesthesia are required. Your pet will be exposed to some ionising radiation as in any xray however this is  within recommended limits. Depending on the images needing reviewed the process normally takes between 15 minutes and half an hour.

We look at the images ourselves for a preliminary diagnosis. We are not trained radiographers although we have some training in this. We also can send the images online to a referral radiography provider where these images can be read by board certified radiographers. The results of these can be returned in as little as 2 hours in emergency cases although the standard is between 1 and 5 days.

CT scanning has revolutionised our ability to image:

  • The skull and spine
  • Brain imaging for gross pathology
  • The joints
  • The limbs
  • The lungs and thoracic components
  • The Abdomenal components
  • Cancer metastasis (spread) Checks

Ct scanning used alongside other diagnostic modalities including ultrasounding, ecgs and digital xrays and a full in house laboratory give us the best chance to diagnose your pets problem and fix it if possible, all in house.
